Furnace Maintenance Tips For This Winter

The winter is coming quickly. Leaves are finally falling off the trees, snowstorms are impending, and a warm blanket is no longer enough to keep you warm. It’s time to turn on the heater and stay warm from the freezing weather outside.

You don’t want to find out that your furnace is dysfunctional when it’s too late. It is important to do furnace maintenance early on, before you desperately need your heater in mid-winter and it just won’t turn on. Follow the following maintenance tips to save you work down the line.

Turn On The Thermostat

You should make sure that your thermostat is in working order. To test your thermostat, switch it from cooling to heating mode, setting the temperature just above the current room temperature. You should hear the furnace starting to work within a minute or two, or else you might have an issue.

If your thermostat doesn’t seem to be working, follow these steps:

  • Pull off the cover of your thermostat and make sure the wire connections are secure. Secure them if they are loose

  • If your wire connections are secure, check to see that the power source to the HVAC system is turned on

  • In the event that your connections are secure, it’s advised to call in a professional to check the blower, heat pump, and furnace fan

Change The Air Filters

You can find your air filters behind a vent grill in either the wall or the ceiling. If not, you might have a single filter in the HVAC system. You should change your filters every few months to keep your furnace running well. If you have a permanent electrostatic filter, you should wash the filter every so often. The cleaner your filters are, the longer your HVAC system will last.

Inspect The Chimney And Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Finding dead animals in your chimney is a smelly and sad ordeal. Chimneys can also fill with carbon buildup. Keep yourself, your loved ones, and your neighborhood critters safe by checking the chimney every so often.

Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer for a reason. It’s nearly impossible to detect without a functioning carbon monoxide detector. Make sure to test and replace the batteries on your carbon monoxide detectors every few months.
