How to Check the Efficiency of Your Boiler

It’s important to maintain the efficiency of all of your appliances in your home. This includes your boiler! If you have an efficient boiler, not only will everything be working smoothly, but you’ll end up saving tons of money in the long run. Modern boilers will have an efficiency rating sticker on them. If you have an older boiler, then you’ll have to manually check the efficiency yourself or hire a professional.

Find the Model Number

The first step is to find the model number of your boiler. You’ll be able to find this number near the dials. There will be a flap where the pipes come out, and there should be a sticker there. There will be both a brand name and a number that indicates the size.

If you can’t find the model number, don’t worry! It will take a little bit more effort to find the model number. Call over your plumber, and they will be able to take a look at your boiler and tell you the rough age. If you’re unable to call your plumber, you can check to see if there’s a condense pipe running underneath your boiler. If you have this pipe, then your boiler has high efficiency in the high 80s. Also, if you have an old open flue, then you have an older boiler, meaning it’s less efficient.

Visit the Database

The PCDP database will be able to tell you the efficiency of your boiler once you have the model number. Since your boiler has different efficiency power throughout the year, you’re going to want to check out the seasonal efficiency.

Determine the Efficiency

Since the rating comes in a range from 60% to 95% efficiency, you’ll be able to figure out the efficiency rating. Many modern-day boilers are highly efficient, meaning they’re in the 80s or 90s range of efficiency. On the other hand, boilers, which are a couple of decades-old, are going to be in the 85% or lower range.
