How to Prepare Your AC for the Summer

For many, the summer heat is a relief from the chill of previous months. Others, however, dread those summer months and the temperatures it brings. These people want to be sure they prep their AC for summer. There's nothing like coming into the hottest days of the year without your home's air conditioning in top shape.

Clean the Unit

The exterior AC unit can quickly become covered in grass, vines, and other debris that inhibits its performance. Before turning on your AC for the season, go outside and clean it. Remove any foliage and garbage and clean the coils. Dust, dirt, and mud can easily create some problems, so be sure to clean the fins thoroughly. Be incredibly gentle with the fins, as they can bend easily. You can use a toothbrush or a soft-bristled brush carefully to clean the unit entirely.

Ensure Your Exterior Unit is Level

Problems can arise if the unit is unlevel. Check your concrete slab for damages and leveling concerns to prevent any issues. You can fix a leveling problem by forcing up the slab with a board and filling the gap with gravel. When the gravel has made the slab level, you can remove the board and know that your AC has been saved from working overtime.

Clear Out the Condensation Lines

Did you know condensation lines can get clogged? They can – and when they do, it’s no fun for the homeowners dealing with water damage in their house or paying the bill for AC unit repairs. Checking your condensation lines is as easy as finding out where the pipe drains and ensuring that it is draining.

Remember to Change the Filters

Changing filters is a simple maintenance routine that homeowners should never skip. Pet hair, dust, dirt, and other debris can cling to the filter. Although many brands suggest a few months between changes, most professionals would tell you to make sure that your filters get changed every other month or more.

Try a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat will prevent your AC unit from working too hard while away from the house. You can set your temperature to a bit higher than you prefer while no one is home, and your unit will get a slight break on those hot days. The AC will not have to work extra hard to get it to your preferred temperature when you get back home.
