Preparing Your HVAC System for the Spring

Spring is just around the corner which means it’s the perfect time to start preparing your HVAC system for the warmer weather. We put together a checklist to help you prep your HVAC system to ensure it will be working properly when the time comes.

Remove Covers

Because of the snowy and icy conditions of New England winters, homeowners often cover their outdoor AC units to protect them. If you cover your outdoor AC unit the first thing you want to do before using the unit is to uncover it. After you uncover your unit, you should also inspect around it, remove any debris, and check for damages.

Change Air Filters

Throughout the winter, the HVAC systems air filters accumulate a lot of dust and debris, so before you start using your unit, you should be changed the air filter. There are many different sizes and types of air filters, so be sure you purchase one that fits your unit properly. If you are unsure what size to get, please contact an HVAC technician. Keep in mind that you should be changing your unit’s air filter every 1 to 3 months.

Clean Vents

Similar to an HVAC’s air filters, their vents can also become clogged or dirty during the winter. Dirty vents can cause expensive cooling bills, low airflow, and poor air quality. You can easily clean out the dust, pet hair, and other debris by vacuuming them.

Check Thermostat

After checking all the aspects of your AC unit discussed above, the only other thing you need to remember to check is your thermostat. Sometimes thermostats break or become damaged, so if you notice that your thermostat isn’t working properly, please contact an HVAC technician to come check it out.
