Common Toilet Problems and How To Fix Them

Clogged Toilet

One of the most common problems with toilets is clogs. Clogs are typically not serious but will block the water from flushing in the toilet like it should. Clogs can be caused by a number of different things such as flushing paper towels, sanitary items, or anything else other than toilet paper that can’t break down easily. Depending on how bad the clog is, it is usually rather easy to fix on your own without a plumber. Most clogs can be fixed using a plunger. If you have tried to plunge your toilet and the clog still isn’t fixed, then call a plumber for help.

Slow Flushing

Typically, if homeowners are experiencing a slow flushing toilet that usually is an indication that something is wrong with their septic tank or leach field. Slow flushing usually means that the leach field has become clogged or blocked. In this can you may need to have your leach field cleaned out using a shock treatment. However, to ensure that your leach field is blocked, you should contact an experienced plumber.

Water Level Dropped In Bowl

Sometimes homeowners notice that their toilet is no longer filling with water after a flush, which is an indication that the water level in the tank on the back of the toilet has dropped below the p-trap. There can a number of different reasons including the following. If you are experiencing a water level drop in your tank or if your toilet is no longer filling with water, please contact a plumber to get it fixed.

  • Fill Tube: The fill tube is the hose that transfers water into the toilet after being flushed. This tube can break or become damaged over time causing the water not to flow as it should.

  • Cracked Bowl: Another rare reason you may be experiencing this toilet problem is due to a cracked bowl. A cracked bowl, however, is fairly noticeable. If you have a cracked bowl you may notice the crack or water on the floor from the bowl leaking.

  • Vent: A faulty vent can also cause low water levels in a toilet bowl. The vent is used to ensure water flow throughout the pipes of the plumbing system.

  • Fill Valve: Another aspect of a toilet that can become damaged or break is the fill value. The fill value is responsible for making sure the water tank gets refilled with water after each flush.
